With over 17 years of hiking experience, hundreds of trail miles and over a 1000 peaks under my belt I've often said, "there is no such thing as a bad hike." At 1:00 on Saturday, February 13th, with just one wrong step, I found out that there was such a thing as a bad hike. What began as an awesome hike, turned into the hike from hell! The descent down Sabbaday Brook trail was steep & icy but I've done it many times before in all types of conditions so I didn't anticipate any problems. Within a split second after losing my footing, I found myself plummeting down the mountain like a luge slider without a sled! My left leg was fully extended and made contact with a tree. The loud cracking sounds of my bones shattering will haunt me to my last breath. Shortly after impact, the pain subsided and I inched myself down the steep slope staying in the deep snow for control and cushioning.
My two hiking companions, Gene Coburn and Andy Hawley, immediately went into action by making me comfortable and starting a fire. Gene headed back to the summit to get cell service and called 911. He made many trips to the summit during the 8 hour wait for the rescue team. Within minutes of my accident 5 wonderful hikers assisted and stayed with us for 8 hours until rescue arrived. We had met them on the summit and really enjoyed their company. Their names are as follows: Jim Dunn, Ken Young, Kate Ouellette, Ron Boucher and Pete Cormier. Kate quickly took a splint from her pack and put it on my injured leg.
I'll forever be grateful to the 20 wonderful folks that rescued me including my son, Steve and friend, Gene who assisted the rescue team by pulling me 4.3 miles down Sabbaday Brook trail to safety.

This 14 hour epic trek was a slice of heaven...June, John, Bill, Bob and I joined team leader & hiking legend Ed Hawkins on this 24 mile hike thru the beautiful Pemi. Weather was perfect and spirits high as we made our way over the hard snow packed trails. Our day was highlighted by meeting up with 2 other NH mountain legends, Tim Seaver and Cath Goodwin.
